“One’s own childhood suffering remains affectively inaccessible and thus forms the hidden source of new and sometimes very subtle humiliation for the next generation.”

When children grow up without a conscious awareness of their helplessness and their unconscious rage at adults for their ignorance of the pain of childhood, they will, in turn, project that anger to the next generation of children. If we are to promote hope and happiness in the next generations, we must make a conscious effort to improve our awareness of others—their feelings and values—and our own hidden issues—rage, jealousy, sadness, etc.
